The Four Agreements

I was never much of a reader when I was younger but lately I’ve actually enjoyed reading and I try to any chance I get. A few months ago, I told myself I would read a book every  two weeks. I was on a roll and I read about three books but the last month I did not keep my word.

I was a little upset with myself, but I accepted it and forgave myself and I grabbed a new book and immediately started reading again. I have the tendency to order several books and just leaving them in a corner. But I will finish as many books as I can this summer before I order more. There are several in my Amazon shopping cart that are waiting to be bought right now. HAHA.

Once I finish a book, I will post a small blog on my thoughts, what I love or what I may have not loved so much about it. Reading brings me great pleasure and I keep learning so much about myself and life in general. I  am thoroughly delighted when I can read by the pool or somewhere outside. It’s calming and soothing, it also reminds me to be thankful of what we have.

My friend brought me to this cute little coffee shop near Fort Lauderdale called Urban Brew Cafe that had a wall full of books. I fell in love. If you love coffee shops, you need to check it out. Something I want to accomplish and check off my bucket list is having my own library. I would sit in my library and read for hours.

ANYWAYS, just the other day I finished the book “The Four Agreements” – by Don Miguel Ruiz. My older sister recommended me to read this book shortly after our father passed away. I was going through a tough time figuring out what I wanted to do with my life. I felt empty, alone, and confused. My sister told me she felt the same way when she was about my age and told me to read the Four Agreements and the Alchemist. (If you have never read the Alchemist by Paulo Coelho, I really recommend that you do. It truly helps you appreciate your life and may or may not put you to tears, it did for me. This book actually put some light back into my life and I appreciate everything so much more.)

Another thing about the book, The Four Agreements; when I first started reading it at the beach, I took a moment to look up and noticed the girl in front of me was reading the same book! When I took it to the pool the other day, a lady spotted the book and proudly said that she has read it before and loved it. Just the other day I was on Instagram and my friend Louis posted a picture and quote from this book. I find it amazing how the universe works and how  your energy attracts others.

OKAY, I will tell you about the book now! The book starts off talking about agreements that have been made for us since we were babies and throughout our lives. For example, at a young age we were either rewarded or punished by our parents and from then on we learned that, that action or behavior was either considered to be right or wrong and we stuck with those agreements for years. The thoughts and opinions of others became so strong, that most of the decisions we make today are really from the agreements that we created in our minds.

The Four Agreements that Don Miguel Ruiz talks about are as follows:

  1. Be Impeccable with your Word: This just means to say what you mean and to speak the truth. Also, don’t use the word to speak badly about others and even negatively about yourself!
  2. Don’t take anything personally: Whatever is done to you is not because of you but it’s just a projection of that person’s reality.
  3. Don’t Make Assumptions: Making assumptions usually leads to sadness, anxiety, misunderstandings and gossip. Instead of making assumptions be brave enough to ask questions and communication what you truly feel.
  4. Always do your best: No matter if you’re happy or sad, healthy or sick, do the best you can at that moment. Avoid judging yourself by just doing your best at all times.

Don Miguel Ruiz then goes into actually practicing and integrating these four agreements into your life and that you can literally create your own heaven on earth. Your happiness is up to you. This book is definitely an awakening. Even though I was already on a journey to finding happiness and finding out my purpose in life, these agreements have helped me to start questioning my whole life, what I thought I believed in and actually start believing in my word and in myself. Everyday I wake up, I choose to be happy, I choose to love.

If you want to start including these agreements in your life, I will tell you right now it will not happen over night and you may fail a few times. But it’s all worth it, eventually you will feel free and happy.

I do not want to give to much of the book away but I will say I thoroughly loved reading it. If you are finding something to lift you up and guide you, this may be the book for you and it’s a super quick read!

FRIENDS, if you have any book recommendations, please send them my way. OR if you are looking to get rid of some books or just want to donate, send them my way, I will gladly take them! 🙂

Once again, thank you for your time. I love you all and I am here to support you in whatever journey you find yourself in.
